Today, despite the prediction of highs in the mid-90’s, we headed to the City Zoo. It took less than 30 minutes to drive there, and M. napped on the way. We were so early that we had to wait a little while before we could pay to get in, but that just gave Neighbor Nanny, her Husband, and the Twins time to get to the zoo and join us in line.

As soon as we paid, we walked over to see the flamingos. M. was busy chewing on a cool teether, but he did seem a little impressed at their ability to stand on one leg. Then we walked up the hill and saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, and some really fascinating warthogs. Then we looked for the lions, but they were hiding from everyone.

We backtracked a bit and went into the parakeet habitat, and M. loved getting to see birdies up close, especially such colorful and friendly birds. Then, after a water break, we headed over to the gorilla compound, and made a quick stop in to see lemurs. The gorillas were pretty nifty, especially since some of the “toddler-size” gorillas came up nice and close to the viewing area!

After we left the (nice and cool) indoor gorilla viewing area, M. met a little girl named Emma, who was about 6, and thought M. was “really CUTE!” Then we took another water break, and saw the naked mole rats, who were exactly as appealing as they sound.  Even with all the shade, it was getting a little warm and M. was hungry, so we headed into the cool and comfy, yet creepy, reptile house. The Twins looked around while M. had a bottle and people watched. He also got a chance to get out of the stroller and stretch his legs a bit before we all headed down to see the pandas.

We saw some more apes and monkeys, as well as a few bears, tigers, and red pandas on our way to see the pandas from China, who were so cool! The indoor viewing area is floor to ceiling glass, so M. sat in the stroller about 2 feet from the glass and one of the pandas ambled up and lay down for a rest right in front of him! M. was bouncing up and down in the stroller and squealing with excitement.

We headed down for lunch after leaving the pandas behind, and M. had fun eating puffs and sweet potatoes and trying his best to charm Neighbor Nanny's Husband's socks off. Once everyone was done eating lunch there was a diaper explosion, and M. got to ride around in just a fresh diaper, which was simultaneously redneck and adorable. He was getting restless, so we said bye to the Twins (and Neighbor Nanny and her Husband) and headed to the car.

Calling all nannies, babysitters, moms and dads. Especially within the Christian community/musician community here in Nashville/Franklin...I need YOUR input!

I spend a lot of my time helping people find babysitters, trying to find fill-in's for my families when I am not available, and discussing with people appropriate pay, how to interview, etc.   One of the ladies that I nanny for threw out the idea the other day that I should start something similar to the nanny agencies here, but do it specifically as a Christian agency.  I've been thinking through the idea and although I'm not super excited about starting a new business or anything, it has occurred to me that I spend much of my time doing what those agencies do and if I made it official I could do that job even better.
I would like to get some other people's input on the idea and see if there would even be enough interest and also would love any ideas for thing you would like to see.

Here is a general description of what I thought would be helpful for families and nannies/babysitters:

  • Conduct interviews of all incoming nannies/babysitters and have all their information on hand
  • Interview/meet with families to hear what they need, what their routine is, and what they are looking for in a third-party caretaker
  • help match care-takers with families (like match.com but for babysitters and families...right?)
  • Set up a "classifieds" so that when you find yourself needing an emergency babysitter there is a list of already approved, responsible babysitters to contact.  This works to the benefit of everybody, babysitters can chose to be available for last minute calls and pick up extra work and families know they aren't just getting some random person they know nothing about.
  • "Shared" nannies would be much easier to come by with this system...I am a shared nanny and can at times be juggling three or four musician/traveling families....this works because I end up knowing I have full-time work...this doesn't always work because I need to find fill-in's for certain days.  If we had a network of nannies within our community it would make scheduling easier on everyone.  As it is my friends and I have our own little "network" and fill-in for each other and pass off jobs when needed.
  • I would also make this blog more consistent (now that I have Internet) with tips on working out confrontation, nanny searching tips, and other helpful tools for families and nannies alike.
  • As much as I'd like to do it for free I would need to be making some income for my time being the "go-between" person so there would be a percentage cost from either that babysitters/nanny income and possibly a one-time fee for the families to join

Interviewing nannies can be difficult and stressful process because you are trying to pick the best candidate to care for your child and you want to make sure you make the correct decision.

The first thing to remember is be easy on yourself. Acknowledge and let go of the stress, remember you are in control of the situation and in charge of choosing the nanny. Trust your maternal and gut instincts. However, do not confuse instincts with being judgmental. Never judge a nanny based on what you think they are before you sit down and chat with them. Each nanny is different in her experiences, beliefs, discipline techniques, and overall personality and there is one that is a fantastic fit for your family! So remember, you are in charge and you have the maternal and instinctual skills to choose the best candidate for your family.

Important questions to ask:

  • Why have you chosen to be a nanny?
  • What are some things that you love about being a nanny?
  • What are your strengths? How do you think those help you in caring for children?
  • What are your weaknesses? Do they effect you ability to be an excellent nanny?
  • Are you comfortable driving the children to sports, school, activities, etc?
  • Are you able to swim?
  • Do you have any life threatening allergies that we should be aware of?
  • Would you be ok with staying home with my children if they are sick or unable to attend school?
  • What is your availability?
  • Do you have any days that you must have off or upcoming plans that you would need days off for (i.e. vacations, a wedding, funeral, etc?)
  • Do you have children? What are their ages? What would your plan be if your child falls ill and is unable to go to their summer camp or school?
  • How would you handle my child if they stated to have a temper tantrum while you are out? Would you handle the situation differently if you were at home? How so?
  • What are your discipline methods?
  • Would you feel comfortable adhering to our house rules and discipline methods?
  • What do you typically wear to work?
  • Are you able to make and within reason adhere to a daily schedule for the child?
  • Do you consider yourself an organized person? Can you give me an example?
  • Do you plan things out or wait until the last minute to complete tasks and assignments?

Other important questions to ask if they apply to your family
  • Are you comfortable with pets?
  • Would you be willing to travel with us?
  • Are you comfortable travelling domestically and internationally?
  • Are you comfortable taking a child around a city you are unfamiliar with to go to museums, sports, activities, etc?
  • Do you get motion sick?
  • Are you comfortable going to church with us?
  • Are you comfortable signing a confidentiality agreement?
  • Would you be able to use an epi pen if my child is going into anaphylactic shock?
  • Are you comfortable teaching our child about our religion and beliefs?
  • What is your college degree in?
  • Are you able to teach our child.... (list out things you would like the nanny to teach your child i.e. abc's, numbers, how to add and subtract, reading, etc.)
  • Are you able to adhere to our house rules, dress code/ uniform requirements?

Next ask the nanny if she has any questions for you about you, the children, the job, requirements, etc. Engage the nanny in a conversation. Ask where she was raised, what her parents do, etc. It is important for you to feel comfortable and as though you can work with and trust her. The nanny could look fantastic on paper and interview like a pro but if her personality and yours do not mix then she is not the right nanny for your family.

Remember while you want to know as much as possible about a nanny and her experience, why she left previous jobs, etc you need to remember that she is a person with feelings. She has loved and cared about each of her previous charges so you may ask about her jobs, tasks included, and skills that she believes she would bring to your family but do not ask which child or family was her favorite or least favorite. I say this because like you love each of your children in different ways for their differences nannies love their previous charges a similar way. Asking that question could make the nanny uncomfortable or awkward and honestly that information does not have anything to do with the nanny that she could be with your family.

Interviewing a nanny is an essential part of the hiring process which should be made a high priority. There are a lot of advantages when preparing for a thorough interview. It can save a lot of time both in the hiring process and once you have selected a candidate knowing that she is the best fit for the role.

Consider the following items when interviewing a nanny:

Situational Interview Questions
When conducting an interview it is always standard practice to put our "best-foot-forward." It is very important to see how the applicant performed in her previous experience through situational questions. By doing this, we can get answers from the applicant based on actual experiences. Some example questions would be - "Can you give a situation when you had to go through a conflict while a child is under your care and you had to resolve it on your own?" Questions such as these can also eliminate the "hypothetical answers" an applicant can give.

Employment History
It is during the interview when you get the chance to verify the information from the applicant's resume from the applicant themselves. It is important for us to let the applicant walk through their past work experiences and describe their role, tenure, reasons for leaving each job, and the like. Getting this information from the applicant allows us to see how she performed in each of her job which definitely should be considered in hiring her.

Childcare Experience
Possibly related to employment history, yet digging deeper to the applicant's experience working with children is also a consideration during the interview. This is not only related to the nanny's paid childcare experiences but also on how comfortable she is in taking care of a child personally. The applicant may have raised children of her own which can be an advantage. You may also ask her of her strategies of establishing a relationship with a child since she is initially a complete stranger, or in cases when a child may be difficult behavior wise.

Values and Philosophy
Since the nanny role is almost like being part of the child's family knowing their values and philosophies in life is important to understand during the interview. This can gauge whether or not the nanny's values are in line with the family's values and knowing this could be an indicator if she can be a good guide and model for your child. The nanny's view of herself and her role can also be discussed in obtaining this information and would give us an idea if they can establish a good relationship with your child.

Character References
It is important to ask the nanny applicant for character references preferably from her previous employment. You can see if the applicant is confident in giving this information which will give you a clear picture if they are willing to perform a thorough background check. This would also mean that she had a good relationship with her previous employers and not afraid of any other information you may obtain from these references.

It is important to remember that it is never a waste of time to be selective during the hiring process and consider that you would only want the best nanny for your children. Preparing for the interview and knowing what to consider in selecting candidates can make the whole process less stressful. Hir-ing the best candidate doesn't only mean that the nanny has specific qualities we are looking for, but also means she is best for the role. Hiring someone is more than just taking care of children but also someone who would be a good influence on them would stay in their role in a reasonable period of time.

Nannies are essential and vital for any new mom and dad in a busy city, such as Canberra. When parents are blessed with a new baby boy or a girl, they will have to make sure that they take good care of him. This is why they have to ensure his safety when they are busy at work; they have to make sure that this defenseless boy or girl is safe in their house when they are not with the baby. This is why they have to hire nannies to take care of their little child. In order to find the best nanny you have to follow these simple steps.

How to find the best nanny

If you are a part of a new mothers’ club, then go and ask your club members if they know good nannies in Canberra that you can hire. You can also ask your relatives, friends, neighbors and even your friends at work. This is due to the fact that at a certain time, all of these people have been in the situation that you are in. After you get a list of names from your friends, start to interview these nannies one by one in your home. Also make sure that your baby is with you. A good nanny would arrive in time and will be well dressed.

Another thing that you should do is ask these Canberra nannies to bring you a reference list. A reference list is a list that contains the names of the people that the nanny worked for previously. This way you can ask these previous employers about the nanny’s performance and how good was she with the children. It is advised to call the references while the nanny is still at your home so you can ask her additional questions if they come up as a result of what you hear from the references.

Also you have to make sure that while you are interviewing the nannies that they know how to perform CPR on children and infants. This is due to the fact that the CPR process for infants is different from the CPR process for adults. This is why they have to be certified and know how to carry out CRP on infants. Matter of fact, it is advisable to know how to do it yourself as well, alongside the other residents of the house. There are places where you can take courses to teach you how to do CPR for infants.

After you narrow down the list of nannies invite them one nanny at a time to your house. Allow the nanny to interact with your infant while you are there, so you can check how she deals with the baby. You will see what she will do when the baby is crying or when he needs to get his diaper changed. You also should see how the baby reacts to the voice of the nanny, her touch and smell. It is vital to check this interaction between the baby and the nanny before you hire the services of any nanny.

After you decide on the best nanny from the many nannies that you interviewed, it will be time for you to back to your daily work and career. It will be the first time you go to work and leave your baby with the nanny. Of course, despite the fact that you have interviewed the nanny and called the reference list, but you will not be 100% sure that she is a good and reliable nanny. Don’t worry as there are ways that would allow you to be certain.

One of the most popular methods is a hidden camera, also known as a nanny camera. This camera would allow you to monitor and view what the nanny is doing with your baby the whole time while you are not at home. Nanny Cams are the best way to monitor the performance of nannies while you are not present in the house. These are state of the art cameras that are very easy to install and use. This will enable you to monitor the nanny pretty easily.

You don’t have to worry about where to put these cameras as they can be easily situated basically anywhere in your house and they will not be spotted by the nannies. After you go back home, you can easily view the whole footage of the Nanny Cam to see how did your nanny deal with your baby while you were out of the house. These steps are vital to make sure that you have a nanny that is caring and deals with your baby with care and love. If you follow these steps, you will make sure that your baby is being handled with care and love while your nanny is with him.

Find a nanny in a city like Canberra is not easy as you think. Your nanny Canberra should be able to take care of your children and should be very professional. There are people who had made wrong decision on selection of nanny for their loving children. However, if you are very clear on your requirements as an employer and clearly explain it to candidate which will help you to find a nanny to fit with your requirements and needs. But, it is not easy as saying. So, here are some ideas, on what are the things to be taken into account when choosing a nanny.

#1 Ask about their experience as Canberra nanny.

Get clear ideas about candidate's experiences as nanny is very important. An experienced nanny only knows how to handle children, how to take care of them, how to treat them when they are doing some “child play”, like spit-ups, tantrums and etc. Inexperienced nanny may not well aware about child play and may become rude with child when child spit-up, tantrums or any other similar actions from child. It is advisable to ask questions on all the boundaries like how nanny will treat the child during  tantrums, how to teach child, how to feed child, what to do during child is sick in conditions, what to do when child is wet and etc. There are young babysitters who take care of children mostly as part-time also may be one of your candidate, but it is not better to go for them rather than a full-time nanny as far as your need is to find a nanny. You are going to leave your baby on others arm for few times, so you should take full responsible on selecting perfect nanny.

#2 Is your nanny living near Canberra?

Finding a nanny in Canberra will make your and nanny's life easier. There are chances for her to be late, if she is near, it is easier for her. Apart from that, if she is near by area of you, she is very much friendly with the areas, that helps during an emergency. There are cases, where nanny is great in all the aspects, but she has to travel about few hours to come – but that may bring issues as she needs to take long time to travel and she may not comfortable on long run, on the other hand, she may not familiar with your area and may find difficulty on finding stores like pharmacy and etc.

# 3. Verify references
An experienced nanny will not hesitate to give you references of her previous work. If an experienced nanny hesitates to give references or does not have any, it is better to stop at that point and go for next candidate. Why do I say so? If you have good experiences with a nanny, you will recommend her, but if you have bad experiences you will not.

#4. Ask for ID and fingerprints for background verifications
At the moment, many nanny agencies in Canberra providing these things (You can check some websites), because background check is must as you are going to leave your loving children with some unknown people. So, you should have very clear details about that person. Sometimes, some may not like to give such details, if so, you can ask them to explain why? If you find the explanation is reasonable, you can hire them under your own risk, but that is not recommended. Also, even if you find nanny with the help of nanny agencies, it is important to ask for ID and fingerprints for a background check.

#5. Ask more details about previous job
There are people who are fond of children mostly choose their career as nanny, such people may express their views on taking care of children for her previous employer. As well as she may explain about how she was treated well by her previous employer? Tailor more relevant questions related to personal, emotional things and etc, that will show you very clear picture of your candidate, apart from that, it helps you to understand well. You can ask about her struggles with her previous employer. Even a nanny is well experienced and very qualified with good degrees and other qualifications, there are chances to work with a bad employer. Give a chance to explain those in detail before make a judgment about your candidate. More friendly questions will make her to open up her mind more widely, that helps you to listen and learn about her and decide whether to hire her as your nanny or not.

If you are Darwin and looking for nannies around there.

Also, note that there are experienced nannies (aged nannies) do not desire to change their way of care-giving as they still in thought that their old methods are still best. It is wise to put up front all your needs and requirements at first point on such things. If your nanny agrees, she will go further on your interview phase, otherwise go for next.

Find a nanny Canberra may be difficult without asking above mentioned questions in detail. Also, keep in mind, relationship between your family and nanny is kind of long -lasting relationship, as it is very important to put additional care on nanny selection. Good luck on finding your nanny.
